We all know the smell of climbing shoes can be devastating, but what can be done about it? Until recently, the guys and gals at Vertical Gear have been trying all sorts of home grown methods to stop the massacre of close proximity wildlife; from talcum powder, to cinnamon sticks and drain cleaner, nothing seemed to work… Thankfully, we’ve discovered Boot Bananas.
We developed the idea of Boot Bananas from our flat in Croydon about 18 months ago. We are a couple, one half Phil, a rock climber with stinky climbing shoes the other half Alex, a product modelmaker. Together we invented a new solution to the stink of climbing boots. For over a year, we handmade all Boot Bananas from our dining table and were pleased to see it take off so quickly in the climbing world. We have now scaled up production out of our flat and to our new manufactures Troll Outdoors in north Yorkshire. – Phil and Alex, Directors.
How Do They Work?
Bamboo charcoal, sodium bicarbonate, zeolite, tea tree, lavender oil & lemon oil work together to absorb moisture (to prevent the growth of bacteria in the shoe) and leave behind a pleasant fragrance – the end result is a dry shoe that smells great, we found the odour management very effective after just a single day of use.
How Long Do They Last?
Boot Bananas claim approximately 6 months of use, which our research suggests is a fair prediction (a friend of ours is into his 5th month of use and the bananas are still doing a great job). We love the ‘ripeness indicator’, where the bananas will ‘ripen’ and change colour to give an indication of when they need replacing.
The only downside we could find was the weight of the Bananas (being surprisingly weighty), they might not make the best travel companions where weight is a major concern, we recently took a pair with us to Spain regardless and carried these through airport security without issue.
From sprays to DIY remedies, we found Boot Bananas to be the most effect way of keeping your shoe odour under control. The natural ingredients and construction will not damage your footwear, they did not irritate our feet and with an RRP of £13 and a great lifespan we think this great solution is also fantastic value for money.
