The Edelrid Boa is a 9.8mm dynamic climbing rope aimed towards sport climbing. The Boa features Edelrid’s Thermo Shield – “A heat process to stabilize individual yarns, ensuring the rope stays supple throughout its working lifetime.” and comes with a pre-marked centre point.
The first thing we noticed about the Boa was just how well it handles, it has a supple feel to it and ties very easily. When giving slack to a leader, the Boa pays very well through a standard belay device and locks securely in fall. It’s smooth operation does mean that it runs through the belay quite easily when lowering, so it’s always worth being slightly cautious with a new rope until you get familiarised with it’s characteristics.
We’ve only had the Boa for around 4 weeks at the time of writing (we will update this section later in the year), but initial impressions on durability are positive – after some light use the Boa shows no sign of significant wear. It’s sheath, although smooth and supple, does feel like it will withstand some abuse but only time will tell.
At 62g/m the Boa sits in the middle of it’s 9.8mm rivals in terms of weight. A few grams here and there does seem like an insignificant amount, but over 70 or 80m it does add up to the equivalent of around 6 lightweight quickdraws (between the lightest and heaviest ropes), so it’s worth taking note of a ropes g/m when considering your purchase.

Value / Summary
For sport climbing (Edelrid do not rate this rope for Alpine based climbing), this has to be our favourite and preferred rope to-date. The handling characteristics are a real selling point, and with a competitive weight and promising durability the Edelrid Boa is a serious contender for anyone looking for a good all-round dynamic sport rope.
