The 32L Metolius Ropemaster HC is a high capacity version of the worlds best selling rope bag, it features an angled 52″ x 58″ (132 cm x 147 cm) tarp with rope tie in points (for quick identification and organisation of the rope), a large main shoulder strap and smaller grab handle.
The Ropemaster has a large capacity at 32 litres, we found it could swallow a 50m rope, harness, gear, shoes and chalk (enough for 1 person, maybe 2 with lightweight gear) for a days cragging. However, the single carry strap does become uncomfortable on long hikes (30 mins +) so in these cases it’s probably best to put everything except the rope into a backpack. The construction is very good and the bag feels solid, it hasn’t worn at all during our testing period and think it will last a lot of abuse for months/years to come.
On the outside of the bag, there are two main straps with large aluminium buckles that hold everything together, the rim of the opening has a drawstring so the bag adapts really well to different loads. There is one main shoulder strap and one grab handle, both of which seem durable but perhaps not super comfortable as we mentioned earlier. At the top/opening of the bag, you can see the tarp has a little window at one tie in point, so you can identify which rope is in the bag.
Once flaked, the rope packs and deploys very easily making this bag great for moving quickly from one pitch to another, because the tarp is permanently attached to the bag it makes the whole process fairly faff free. The rope is simply rolled up in the tarp and dumped into the bag, when you’re at the crag you just roll it out and everything is ready to go, simples.
Overall the Ropemaster HC measures up as an excellent cragging bag for local/short walk-ins (like many Sandstone crags in the UK). If you really want to, you can get a whole day’s kit in there and the tarp does an excellent job of keeping everything clean and dry.
