The North Face® Reinvents Exploration With The Nanga Parbat Winter Expedition 2014

Battling against fierce extremes, including temperatures consistently below -40C, The North Face® athletes Simone Moro and David Goettler will endeavour to become the first ever Alpinists to reach the summit of Nanga Parbat in winter.

Taking up to three months, the team will leave this December for one of the toughest expeditions on Earth, during the coldest and most demanding season. Scaling this immense dramatic peak will be a huge physical and mental challenge, with the additional difficulty of a Base Camp that is located more than 5000 meters below the summit.

The Nanga Parbat Winter Expedition 2014

Since 1988, 29 attempts have been made at winter ascents on Pakistan’s 8000m peaks, of which 16 were on Nanga Parbat – all without success. Weather windows in winter are short and Simone estimates that the team’s chances of reaching the summit are just 20%.

Known as “Killer Mountain”, Nanga Parbat in Pakistan is a notoriously difficult climb and has claimed the lives of numerous mountaineers. The 9th tallest mountain in the world, Nanga Parbat rises to 8125 meters (26,648ft) and is one of only two of the fourteen 8000m peaks that have never been climbed in winter, alongside K2.

The Nanga Parbat Winter Expedition 2014

The overall challenge is to reinvent exploration on winter 8000 meters peaks. At a time when so much has already been achieved in mountaineering, our athletes believe that there are always more challenges to embrace and many more difficulties to overcome. In the words of Simone himself:

I will go in winter. Again. Yes in winter. Just because it’s my dream. Just because exploration never ends.

With three 8000m winter summits already under his belt, Simone from Bergamo in Italy, can be considered a master of winter mountaineering, adopting a minimalist ‘Alpine’ approach. David will be making his first attempt at an 8000m peak in winter, aiming to become the first ever German climber to reach such a height during the coldest months.

Simone and David will be joined by The North Face® athlete, Emilio Previtali, who will deliver exclusive updates from both Base Camp and further up the mountains via messages, photos and videos. Through the roughest conditions, every step of the expedition will be captured and reported back.

The North Face® Nanga Parbat Winter Expedition 2014 will once again showcase the intoxication of the unknown, and the tenacity of the human spirit to push beyond limits.
